Light a new homeowner's fire, literally, by creating a fire-starter kit made from recycled materials. Bundle up some newspaper into squares for tucking under firewood, taking care to secure them with natural twine. To complete the package, throw in a couple of boxes of matches, skewers, and even marshmallows (homemade, if you can swing it).

For another failsafe starter, melt old candles in a double boiler, remove the old wicks, mix in pieces of 100 percent cotton dryer lint, and then pour the mixture into empty cardboard egg cartons. When the wax starts to set, insert a candlewick and let the mixture cool completely. All your host has to do to ward off the chill is to rip off a section, toss it into the fireplace, and send sparks flying. ::Country Home
