Fake grass is not cool. It never has been. However, as we look for ways to green our homes, and reduce our carbon footprint, fake grass may be a viable alternative to the manicured green lawns many of us grew up with. Dig a little deeper; there may be some reasons why fake grass is not so bad.

Price
It is true, fake grass is expensive. However, a comparison of real grass versus fake grass costs, shows fake grass as a long-term investment pays for itself in 3-4 years. Most companies have an 8-10 year warranty on the fake grass; some will recycle it for you free of charge at any time. Save money by installing it yourself or by combining other types of landscaping.

Landscaping
Fake grass can compliment your home's existing landscaping. Some families would rather spend their energy on a flower or vegetable garden than taking care of their lawn. Others would rather landscape their yards with an assortment of rocks, cactus, and trees, using fake grass to create a path through their back yard. Given the choice, many men would like less lawn to mow or none at all.

Eco-friendly
But is fake grass "good" for the environment? The payoff off of not watering your lawn offsets the benefits of real grass's carbon dioxide intake. Some companies are using a soybean layer to hold their fake grass together. It may take a while to find out which is type of "grass" is better for the environment; both have their benefits.

Life-cycle
Fake grass can last 15 to 35 years depending on use. That means low to zero maintenance; no mowing, watering or fertilizing until your kids move out! The stats on real grass lawns: your gas mower sends out smog-forming emissions, uses 21600 gallons of water per year, and most likely synthetic fertilizer.

Geographic Location
In areas that are naturally arid or where drought is common, fake grass may be the smart choice for your home. In large cities where lawns are smaller, or non-existent it may be easier to install fake grass. City rooftops are also a great place for fake grass; it helps cool rooftops and provides a relaxing space to entertain or garden.

Fake grass still needs a makeover, but it has come a long way. Explore the options, reduce your carbon footprint and have more time with your family.
