Enjoying Your Outdoor Space

Actress and realtor Gigi Bergmingham and her husband Matthew create a loveable living space on Greenovate. They transform their Pasadena, California home into a tranquilly green sanctuary. The project not only includes some impressive interior updates, but also revitalizes the outdoor space. Discover five ways you can create a place of escape just outside the walls of your home.

  1. Plant a garden. Cultivating flowers and small vegetation can be both environmentally and spiritually enriching. Simply taking 10 or 15 minutes out of your busy schedule to tend to your little green ones can give you the time you need to de-stress. If you'd like to get some exercise during your outdoor escape, just make the garden bigger. Gardening can be a workout and a timeout wrapped into one.

  2. Hang wind chimes. The soft sound of wind chimes can be just the thing to make your space a place of renewal. If the subtle clanking of metal doesn't appeal to you, consider wooden chimes. They are my personal favorite because they have a more earthy sound.

  3. Make a place to sit on the ground. Lounge and folding chairs are fantastic, but there is something about being in close proximity to the earth that puts life in prospective. Try lying down on a blanket for a few minutes instead of sitting in a chair. Get comfortable with the idea that you don't need a lot of gadgets, gizmos, and props to enjoy the outdoors.

  4. Install appropriate lighting. If you work long hours, you may not get to enjoy your tranquil yard space until later in the evening. Set up lighting that will help you use the space 24 hours a day. Ask the folks at your local building supply store about solar powered or other energy efficient lighting options. When you're meditating in the evening, you won't want to worry about how much electricity you're using during the process.

  5. Remove clutter. Keep your outdoor sanctuary free of unnecessary items. Periodically take inventory of what you have in the space and feel free to donate or sell furniture, toys, or other outdoor items. Having a clear space to think is of the utmost importance. Save only the things that make your experience relaxing and rejuvenating.
