Many of us have a relative or friend who insists on gifting the same thing each year. You know the usual suspects: another sweater, more new pajamas. Even when you want these items, and can use them, they can start to really add up; to keep the clutter out of your home and your life, we recommend a "zero sum" holiday, so you don't come out of it with more stuff than you had before you started exchanging gifts. If you get some new jeans, donate an old pair; if you upgrade your DVD player, use eBay or Freecycle to help it find a new home.

The idea of a zero-sum holiday sounds easy enough, but it can be emotionally and physically difficult to get rid of stuff that has meaning to you. To make it a little easier, it doesn't have to apply to every gift you get; consumables that you'll use up and one-of-a-kind gifts that don't replace anything you already have don't have trade spots with something you've already got. But when it comes to apparel, toys, and gadgets, just remember "Out with the old, in with the new."
