I'm a big fan of using a human-powered, zero-carbon broom to sweep up most messes, but when it comes to hard-to-reach places, rugs, and rolling dust bunnies, I'm an even bigger fan of technology, especially if it falls into the less-is-more category, and doesn't make me feel like I'm murdering the planet because I want a cat-hair-free hallway.
The first cordless vacuums to receive the Energy Star label, the Dirt Devil AccuCharge hand and stick vacuums are said to charge twice as fast, use 70 percent less energy, and have extended battery life, primarily because the charging adapter in the battery is able to more efficiently convert AC power to the DC batteries. Plus, when the battery is full charged, according to Dirt Devil, the power is reduced to a trickle mode to maintain the vacuum's charge and readiness.
Two models are available: The AccuChrage Cordless 15.6 Volt Hand Vac ($44.99), which features a crevice tool for tight spots, and the AccuCharge Cordless 15.6 Volt Stick Vac ($59.99), which includes a rotating brush for carpets. Both come with a standard three- and two-year warranty, respectively. ::Dirt Devil
