Remodeling. It's a creative and fun way for a person to finally put their own personal touch into a home. It's expression via home décor at its finest…and it can also be a pain! Remodeling is accompanied by headaches for many a homeowner. It can be expensive and difficult, not to mention time consuming. So the last thing most home owners want to think about when remodeling is whether or not they're being environmentally responsible when they're remodeling.

Well, thinking about the planet while you install those new lights in your kitchen doesn't have to be terribly inconvenient. After all, Ed always finds a way to consider the planet when making changes around his house! Here are some basic tips I've got for you when remodeling your house:

  • Be creative! Be very creative. Instead of buying a new chandelier, fashion some old glass pieces into one. Think about the difference between things you want to buy and things you can craft yourself instead.

  • Reuse! Do you have extra paint in the garage? Why not try mixing some colors you’ve already got to create that new color rather than buy new paint? If you need new tiles, think about rocks from outside or broken glass pieces you can use to mosaic the walls and floors of your bathroom or kitchen before splurging on a brand new tile system.

  • Think forward! So you're thinking about getting a whole lot of new lights for the house? Hmm... Maybe you could knock out a wall and put in a huge window instead? Relying on natural light will save you lots of money and energy in the end. Need a new dining room set? There are fantastic vintage pieces at thrift stores that you can polish up yourself. Using items from thrift stores helps our environment because it reduces the energy required for the production of new materials.

On top of being environmentally responsible, these tips will also save you money!
