Even as we speak, the postal elves are gearing up for the holiday onslaught of yuletide cheer. But before you reach for the Styrofoam peanuts and bubble wrap, consider using greener packing alternatives that are as appealing as the present itself.

The editors of Country Living (December 2007) suggest using real peanuts instead of their styrofoam versions, and used wrapping paper in lieu of bubble wrap. You can even thematically coordinate your gift and its packing materials. Cushion a cook book, for instance, in a bed of peppermint candies-a lipsmacking gift in itself-or pad a music box with crumpled sheets of vintage music scores. Here's another suggestion: Protect your present in a fragrant nest of pinecones and cedar boughs that can double as holiday decorations when they reach their destination. ::Country Living
