There's no need to swaddle your baby in expensive brand-new clothing when hand-me-downs are perfectly serviceable-trust us, the kid won't be able to tell the difference, much less be emotionally scarred by the indignity of wearing "used". Considering that your wee bairn will outgrow whatever you buy in the next 10 seconds, you're better off freeing your budget for something that will reap far greater rewards, such as a college fund or extra financial security for your family.
If you don't have an extensive family network to tap into, turn to your local telephone directory or classifieds. Most cities have resale and consignment stores that supply gently used baby clothes at up to 75 percent off regular purchase prices. Many will also take back clothing your child has outgrown in exchange for cash or store credit.
On the Internet, check out online consignment stores such as Baby Outfitter, MyKidsCloset.com, and Once Worn...Not for Long, as well as parent-to-parent barter sites such as Freepeats and Zwaggle.com.
