Gulp, can dirty dishes cause or exacerbate debt? Absolutely, says Jill Cooper of Living on a Dime, so get those dirty dishes out of the sink, pronto!
"We go out to eat because we can't face a dirty kitchen," Cooper says. "Keeping your kitchen empty of dirty dishes is the key to saving money. ...Most people are so overwhelmed with piled counter tops and dirty dishes that they would rather go out to eat than face a dirty kitchen."
And she has the numbers to back her up: Americans consume 70 million restaurant meals a day at almost one million restaurants across the country, according to the Green Restaurant Association. Each establishment churns out 50,000 pounds of waste and uses around 300,000 gallons of water every year.
So do the dishes after every meal, Cooper advises, and keep hot, soapy water in the sink while you are baking or cooking, so you can clean as you go. ::Living on a Dime
