My daughter was born in late February in a leap year; I thought it would be fun if she was born on the 29th, it would make a quarter of her birthdays really special and perhaps save on presents, but alas, my wife could not hang on and she was born five days too soon. It is an unusual, special day that should probably be a holiday.
Over in the United Kingdom, the National Trust is giving all its employees the day off, to spend time making their homes and lifestyles more energy efficient. Other employers are being encouraged to do the same, instead of taking advantage of an extra day of free labor from those who get paid by the month or year.
The Trust and Web site Big Green Switch are encouraging Britons to "use that extra day that we get every four years to do something green and positive to reduce your carbon footprint." The suggestions, most of which we've already covered previously, include:1. Installing low-energy light bulbs in your home
2. Planting a tree
3. Draught-proofing any breezy windows, doors, or letterboxes in your home
4. Cancelling your junk mail
5. Starting a compost heap in your garden
6. Switching your energy supply to a green energy option
7. Enquiring about getting cavity wall or loft insulation installed
8. Giving your car a service and check your tyre pressure
9. Working from home to cut out your commuting emissions
