With party season fast approaching, you can make one of two choices: rush out at the last minute to buy cheap plastic decorations in a (likely unsuccessful) attempt at holiday cheer, or plan ahead and make your own festive party trimmings with materials you already have at home. Of course we support the second option, but we're not alone: until November 14, you can submit your best handmade adornments to CRAFT magazine's Upcycled Party Contest land yourself in the running for a brand new Singer Curvy sewing machine.

The task is simple—your upcycled decorations should be made from supplies you currently own—but choose wisely, since the contest allows only one entry per person. We scoped out the submissions so far at the contest's flickr pool, where inventive projects include soda can party lanterns, recycled magazine leis, and holiday place settings that double as both wine charms and tree ornaments. There's some stiff competition, but there's also plenty of time to get your creative juices flowing. (Note to the winner: don't know how to sew? We can help.)
