Looking for the perfect water-filtration system? It couldn't hurt to test your water first, especially if you've just moved to a new 'hood or the history of industrial and agricultural pollution in your area keeps you up at night. If your water comes from a well, says Annie B. Bond, author of Home Enlightenment (2005, Rodale), have it checked for harmful bacteria and other contaminants at least once a year.

For a list of state-certified labs, surf on over to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Web site. Alternatively, you can contact your municipal water facility for a report.

Learn more about the specific contaminants taking up shop in your pipelines at the online home of NSF International, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to public health and safety. You can also search for NSF-certified water-treatment filters and sort them by the type of contaminants they tell to take a hike.
