We had a garden growing up. While my mother never was 100% intentionally 'green', she was incredibly frugal and the frugal and green lifestyles cross a lot of paths. Her frugality spawned a lot of green behaviors, whether or not she knew it. She always made a point to water her garden with a hand waterer instead of the hose. Why? Well, because the hose wasted more water and wasting more water meant wasting more money. She'd measure out her water for her plants and make a second or third trip back for more water if she had to, but she absolutely would not water the garden with a 'water-wasting hose'.
I now realize what a great idea that was.

How to make a hand waterer from your laundry detergent bottle:
Locate your laundry detergent bottle. Wash it out—repeatedly. Watering your plants with soap bubbles won't exactly yield organic produce, so make sure all of the soap is gone from the bottle before continuing with this project.

Heat a screwdriver. Do this by placing it over a flame.

Use the heated screwdriver to melt holes through the cap.

Fill the bottle with water, screw the cap back onto the bottle, and water your thirsty little plants.
This project is a great way to reuse your laundry detergent bottle and closely monitor your water consumption simultaneously.
