Putting your bairns to work in the garden isn't just a way to scam some free labor; gardening, whether at home or at school, offer the little nippers the sensory experience of growing food, as well as the physical activity involved in manipulating tools, planting, harvesting, and building structures such as tomato cages-all with grownup supervision, of course. From Natural Life Magazine:

The simple acts of digging a hole, raking soil, pulling giant weeds, and hauling buckets of water work various muscle groups in the body. Researchers in England found that, with proper guidance, 30 minutes of gardening burned more calories than a 30-minute aerobics class.

A vegetable garden also affords a jump-off point for teaching your kids about quality nutrition, which in turn arms them with the knowledge to make better food choices when they're older. If your child doesn't have the opportunity to participate in a school or community garden-and you don't have the yard space-try container gardening on a windowsill, rooftop, or fire escape. ::Natural Life Magazine
