Thus far, no further: Lori Baird, editor of Cut the Clutter and Stow the Stuff: The Q.U.I.C.K. Way to Bring Lasting Order to Household Chaos (2002, Rodale Books), has a five-step organizing system for conquering clutter once and for all. Known as Q.U.I.C.K, this handy mnemonic tool stands for Quantify, Unload, Isolate, Contain, and Keep it up. Here's how to wield it with aplomb:
1. Quantify: Make an inventory of your clutter.
2. Unload: Get rid of what you don't want or don't need. 3. Isolate: Group everything else into categories that make sense to you.
4. Contain: Find the appropriate storage systems to rein everything in.
5. Keep it up: Understand that fending off clutter is an ongoing process.
The beauty of the Q.U.I.C.K system, says Baird, is that you don't have to feel intimidated by the potential scope of your work. You can start small by tackling your cookbook library, your pantry, or your wardrobe. Then, as your confidence builds, you can move on to the bigger projects, such as your home office files or-ay caramba-the garage.
