Pressing the "cold/cold" button on your washing machine is a great way to save energy, money, and carbon emissions, but it can also get you a free book! To help celebrate World Environment Day (yep, that's today, June 5), the good people at Seventh Generation have invited everyone to take the pledge to Get Out of Hot Water. Here's how it works: sign up to make the switch to washing your clothes in cold water, and Seventh Generation will reward you with a copy of CEO Jeffery Hollender's book, Naturally Clean: The Seventh Generation Guide to Safe and Healthy, Non-Toxic Cleaning. It's that simple: take the pledge, get a book.

As Jasmin mentioned before, about 90 percent of the energy used for washing clothes goes to heating the water, and so switching to cold water can save you upwards of $100 a year in reduced energy costs. And, the book help explain why you should eliminate synthetic chemicals from your home, and delves into why labels and laws fail to protect consumers from household toxins. You'll also learn how to handle cleaning challenges in every room in the house without synthetic chemicals. Get more info on the book in our review of the book, and take the pledge at the Get Out of Hot Water site.

Difficulty level: Easy
