Get squeaky clean with bars of soap instead of liquid shower gel you have to pump out of a petroleum-based plastic bottle. Soap bars, especially the handmade artisan variety, use significantly less packaging than their liquid brethren.
Remember to check your potential purchase against the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep site for hazard scores of popular brands before you buy, while examining the fine print to determine if your soap's made of all-natural ingredients that won't pollute your body or our rivers and streams.
For extra karmic points, try using shampoo bars made with natural or organic oils from companies such as Alpine Naturals (also doubles up as a body bar), Elayne's Garden, Lush, Rawganique, and Vermont Soap. Unless you're ordering online and having your bar shipped to you, the only packaging you'd have to contend with is likely a strip of paper you can easily recycle. (You can also make your own shampoo and conditioner, if you're so inclined.)
