Replace your store-bought carpet and rug freshener with this simple, natural alternative, courtesy of Colleen K. Dodt, author of The Essential Oils Book: Creating Personal Blends for Mind and Body (1996, Storey Books).

Mix two cups of borax with 25 drops of your favorite pure essential oil. (Make sure the oil is evenly distributed throughout the borax.) Shake this mixture liberally all over your carpet using a large spoon or an old powder bottle. Let it sit for for a few minutes, and then vacuum.

Dodt has two indoor/outdoor cats-Rosemary and Buddy-and she credits the borax for keeping her kitties flea-free. Note, however, that although borax is a naturally occurring mineral, it can be toxic if ingested (albeit in high doses), so handle with care and keep out of reach of children.
