Most pet breeders have only one goal in mind-to raise large quantities of purebred animals for profit. They've also been pilloried for misdeeds such as overbreeding, inbreeding, poor veterinary oversight, lousy food and living conditions, overcrowding, and culling of unwanted animals.
Why buy when you can adopt one of the 70,000 puppies and kittens born every day in the United States? Roughly half of the animals in shelters must be euthanized because of a lack of homes, according to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).Love knows no pedigree. Check out Petfinder.com, a Web site that lists more than 250,000 pets from 11,453 adoption groups, to find your perfect match. You can also locate adoptable animals in your neighborhood by keying in your zip code at Pets 911 or by visiting 1800-Save-a-Pet.
If you have your heart set on a particular breed of animal, see if you can locate a rescue group that specializes in the breed of dog or cat you're looking for. To find a purebred rescue group in your area, contact your local animal shelter, check the classifieds section of your newspaper, or hop online. You can also call HSUS at 202-452-1100 (ask for the Companion Animals section).
