It's a fact. Cats are better off indoors. Not only is it safer for your cat, but it's also less hazardous to birds and other wildlife that may cross your cat's path. As Jasmin Malik Chua says in her article, Rein in Your Pet, "cats are the baddest bird killers of all time." That being said, some kitties—mine included—have an insatiable desire to dart for the door. So what's a cat lover to do? Try taking your cat out on a leash!
After hearing stories of people walking their cats, I gave this a try with my own cat recently and he loves it! At first he seemed a little embarrassed about being bound to—gasp—a human, but now he walks the perimeter of the yard like a security cat, checking out the surroundings and marking his territory. If you want to try it out with your furry feline, follow these steps.
Steps to Walking Your Cat
- Get a Harness or Walking Jacket
The first step to 'walking’ your cat is getting a harness. Using a harness or walking jacket, not just a leash, will prevent your kitty from slipping away or injuring his neck during a Houdini-style escape attempt. - Kitty Fashion Show: Try on the Harness
Let your cat get used to his new harness. (This could take some cats longer than others.) Put the harness on your cat and let him wear it around the house, before ever stepping outdoors. This is a great time to make sure the harness fits properly; it should not be too snug or too loose. - Walk on the Wild Side
Even if your cat never falls in love with the harness, he may decide to tolerate it once he sees the big reward—the great outdoors. Take it slow. Even if your cat adores going outside, going out on a harness may be a new experience. (Note: Be sure your cat's shots are up to date and he's wearing an id tag before venturing out.) - Be Patient
Walking a cat is usually much different than walking a dog. In fact there may not even be any walking involved at first. He may be embarrassed about his new duds or be freaked out by the whole experience. Give him time to explore his surroundings, or just sit there and take it all in. In time, if he's digging it, he'll be up and about in no time.
With these steps, fellow cat-lovers will be in awe of you. You'll protect birds and other wildlife from your cat's wild hunting instincts. And best of all you'll be your cat's new best friend!
