The most affordable way to get a steady supply of fresh, plump-and even organic-vegetables is to grow your own. If you don't have a backyard to spare, or you're packing more enthusiasm than space, consider joining a community garden. Just tall buildings and parking lots for miles? Organizing your own community garden isn't as daunting as it sounds, says Kathleen Christensen of Natural Home.

The magazine lists eight easy steps, from getting potential participants together, to troubleshooting any problems that may...heh...crop up. The biggest takeaway we got was being creative when selecting a site:

Gardens can be tucked into unusual spots. One group set up a prolific rooftop garden with plants in wading pools.

As your garden blossoms with life, you can revel not only in bounty you'll soon be harvesting, but also the community of fellow growers you've created.
