Nature, unfortunately, doesn't come with tech support, so if your little composting wrigglers are trying to make a break for it, or worse, they're dying en masse, you'll want to bone up on the New York City Compost Project's troubleshooting guide.

Worm bin smelling a bit ripe? You might have a problem with too much moisture or you're not covering food scraps with enough bedding (use leaves, potting soil, or one-inch strips of newspaper). If your worms are dying, you need to make sure your bin is properly ventilated with holes, and that you're not drowning your annelid allies.

One tip the site doesn't mention, but we've found indispensable: If you have a fruit-fly problem, try freezing your fruit and vegetable cuttings before feeding them to your worms. This destroys the eggs and larvae lurking within. ::New York City Compost Project
