Calculate Your Ecological Footprint

If everyone in the world lived like the average U.S. citizen-that is, had similar eating, transportation, living, and consumption habits-we'd need 5 1/3 planets to support ourselves; the planet has about 4.5 biologically productive acres for each person in the world, and the average ecological footprint in the US is 24 acres.

All this is according to the ecological footprint calculator at the Earth Day Network, which takes information about your eating habits, your personal transportation decisions, your home and its energy and resource use, and the goods and services you purchase and consume to calculate your ecological footprint.

It's a useful tool for contextualizing our individual actions on a planetary scale; it answers the common question of "What difference could I possibly make?" By taking the quiz, you can compare yourself with the rest of the United States, learn where you're above average (and where you're below), and figure out which portion of your life has the biggest impact on the planet. It's a great first step to lightening your load on the planet, and determining your green priorities for the future. So, how big is your footprint? ::EcoFoot.org
