How to Know You're Buying Eco Wood?

Watching all the eco-friendly construction starting up in Greensburg, you might wonder about some of the materials they’re using. For instance—can the wood they buy be green? Is there such a thing as eco-friendly wood? Actually, the answer is yes—sort of. Any way you look at it, trees are coming down to produce wood. But the way they come down can be green. Also, there’s a rise of alternatives to wood in the works that are picking up steam.

For wood to be considered green it must come from a certified sustainable forest—which means the wood harvest has been coordinated with replenishment efforts and other natural factors. This is important—if the wood in products you buy has no such certification, it’s possible that logging efforts in the areas from which it came are irresponsibly depleted the natural reserves. These are a couple of examples of wood products made from certified sustainable wood: the sleek furniture from the Austrian company Team 7 and these fine wares from Durante Furniture in Canada.
