If you've been meaning to see the forest for the trees, slip the National Resources Defense Council's guide to household paper products in your pocket the next time you go shopping for toilet paper, facial tissues, paper towels, and other disposable paper products.

The impact of purchasing products with high recycled content-especially the post-consumer kind, which means the fibers were salvaged from someone's recycling bin-isn't inconsequential: If every household in the United States replaced just one box of virgin-fiber facial tissues with 100 percent recycled sheets, says the environmental non-profit, we would rescue 163,000 trees from the lumberyard. Plus, if every American home replaced one roll of virgin-fiber toilet paper with one made with 100 percent recycled fibers, another 423,900 trees wouldn't need to be felled just to wipe our tushies.

For extra karmic points, choose chlorine-free (TCF) or processed chlorine-free (PCF) paper products. Bleaching with chlorine or chlorine compounds, to make the paper fibers look whiter and brighter, releases toxic carcinogens, such as dioxins, into our air and water. ::NRDC
