Unknown.

Christmas trees used to have real candles, but moved to electric lights and now LED lights for obvious reasons. For Hanukkah, we were still stuck in the primitive wax and oil era until now, when you can build your own microprocessor-controlled LED hanukkiyah, or nine-armed menorah (candleholder). They are traditionally lit in a sequence; one as the lighter candle (the higher shamash) which is used to light the other eight, one of the first night, two on the second etc, totalling 44 candles over the course of the holiday.

That's a lot of candles! the LED version works the same way with a lot less wax. Each time you turn it on, it adds another light until all eight are on. Instructions are here or you can purchase a kit from the designers at Evil Mad Scientist. See the cartoon instructions for assembly here (PDF).
