Stuff Happens: The Attic

Thu Nov 20, 2008 10:00 AM ET

We all have a lot of stuff in our attics. Old and out of season clothes, boxes from our old apartments that never got unpacked, and a number of other things go up to the attic and are forgotten about. Even if you have a clean and tidy attic, there is likely something up there that we all have in common: fiberglass insulation.

Fiberglass insulation, often called "glass wool," does not come from glass sheep. Actually, it comes from sand or recycled glass that is melted to form the insulating fibers. It's light weight, great at keeping cold air out and hot air in, and fire-resistant, but there are some problems with glass wool.

Check out this online video from Stuff Happens to find out why fiberglass insulation is dangerous and what alternatives are available.

If you want even more information on the green world around us, don't miss Stuff Happens Episode: Attic.
