Here in the U.S., we proudly produce a third of the world's trash, to the tune of 4.5 pounds per person every day. Landfills are responsible for more man-made methane emissions than any other source. They also leach toxic sludge. And we're running out of places to put them. You can help cut back on the amount of stuff that gets permanently entombed in your local landfill by buying used instead of new, and by selling your old possessions rather than throwing them out. In addition to saving resources, you'll save money.
Chances are, someone nearby is selling exactly what you need to buy. If you can't find it at a yard sale, try Craigslist, or sign up for a local Freecycle group, where you can post your unwanteds (CD jewel boxes, lighting fixtures, garden tools...) and see what useful materials you can snap up for free.
