Eagerly waiting for the postman to jam your mailbox with seed catalogs? Before you start circling your orders with gusto, consider checking off the items on your garden wish list by attending-or even organizing-a seed swap. Not only will you be able to stash away some dough, but you'll also be able to meet and greet with other horticulturally inclined souls in your neighborhood, while tapping into their collective gardening wisdom.

To find a seed swap in your vicinity, check with your local gardening club, co-op, or Craig's List. Or join an virtual seed exchange at online venues such as the National Gardening Association, the Old Farmer's Almanac, and Organic Gardening. For instant gratification, a fee of $35 will grant you immediate access to thousands of fruit, vegetable, herbs, and flower varieties at the Seed Savers Exchange.

Difficulty level: Easy to moderate
