Give your neighborhood birds a hearty winter-holiday treat by making pinecone bird feeders. Gather several clean, handpicked pinecones and slather them with unsalted organic peanut butter. Pour some organic birdseed into a bowl, and then roll the pinecones in the birdseed until they're completely covered. For the finishing touch, suspend your finished pinecones from an overhang or tree branch with a piece of yarn or string.
DIY Alert recommends opening pinecone petals by placing them in a warm oven at 250ºF. You're also liable to make a mess-the best kind, which kids revel in-so we recommend spreading used newspaper over your kitchen table to protect surfaces from sticky fingers and implements.
Tip: Keep a logbook of the feathered species that stop by (over 925 have been spotted in North America alone), or have your child sketch them so you can identify your visitors together later.
