Woody Harrelson is a vegan but the character he plays in his latest film, Zombieland, loves Twinkies. Problem? Not so much. "My character is searching for the ultimate comfort food, which to him is not another human being but a Twinkie," says Harrelson. "I'm not a Twinkie lover. I don't do sugar or dairy either. When we finally shot my Twinkie-eating scene in the movie, they had to give me a specially made mock Twinkie made of corn meal. It could spur a healthy Twinkie revolution."

Hmmm...maybe Woody is the new Twinkie the Kid because--as Howdy Doody can tell you--the original recipe is far from green or healthy. So, I wonder, can a Twinkie be vegan and organic? Is the revolution upon us?

Enter the subversive gang at Vegan Lunch Box with their...

Five-Step Program for Post-Modern Twinkness

1. Buy a Hostess® Twinkies® Bake Set

2. Throw out the icing injector because it's a cheap piece of junk that will break if you attempt to actually use it. Get yourself a pastry bag fitted with a large star or round tip instead.

3. Make the batter for Fluffy White Cupcakes and start cooking.

4. Let the cakes cool.

5. Make the cream filling:
1/4 cup non-hydrogenated shortening
1/4 cup non-hydrogenated margarine
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 TB barley malt powder

Two more steps:

1. For the full Vegan Twinkie recipe, visit Shmooed Food or get your hands on Vegan Lunch Box.

2. Support a dedicated eco-activist and go see Woody Harrelson in Zombieland.
