Your tongue is a roadmap to the rest of your body. In both Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine the tongue is an important indicator of overall health.

While you may not give it much attention, you should, because like your fingernails, it tells you how you’re doing health-wise and what you can do to improve. This is not a doctor’s advice.

White Coating

In Ayurveda, the white coating present on the tongue is a build up of ama or toxins. It indicates that the digestive system isn't working properly. Each morning, consider removing this toxic build up from the tongue so that it’s not ingested back into the body. The science of Ayurveda says that tongue cleaning activates the salivary glands aiding digestion and revitalizing the throat.

The white coating can also be candida or a build up of yeast or bacteria on the tongue. According to MSN Health, anti-fungal drugs can stop the build up. But from an alternative perspective you can also try a gentle cleanse. Consider giving up dairy, meat, alcohol, sugar, and wheat for a week or so to see if it clears up the ama build up. Limiting dairy is a highly effective tool for removing ama from the tongue as well.

Canker Sores

Canker sores are also called aphthous ulcers. These small sores can occur on your tongue and on the inside of your mouth. These can be hereditary and pop up when the situation is right, like you’re under stress, you bite your lip, or you eat too much citrus, according to MSN Health. However, they should heal within 10 days, and if they don’t, you should see a doctor immediately.

Pale Tongue

If your tongue is pale this could mean that you’re lacking hemoglobin in your diet and are in need of iron. If this is the case with you, load up on iron containing foods like leafy greens, edamame, tempeh, pumpkin seeds, and if you’re a meat eater, consider red meat, especially organ meats.

Bright Red Tongue

A bright red tongue could mean that you’re lacking certain nutrients like B vitamins and iron. Include leafy green vegetables, beans, and peas in your diet. Certain cereals and bread also contain B vitamins.
