It's actually pretty gross how much watermelon that I can eat before I've had my fill. I think that it’s the texture. Sort of crunchy, filled with hydration, with an incredibly sweet overtone. But according to a study done at Texas A & M, the summer fruit may put you in the mood as well. The recent study found that watermelon can enhance the libido. The nutrient found in watermelon called citrulline has the ability to relax blood vessels, a characteristic that's found in many male sexual enhancement drugs like Viagra, according to the study. When consumed the body converts the citrulline to arginine, an amino acid that boosts nitric acid, opening the blood vessels that can cause erectile dysfunction in men. Best of all, watermelon has none of the side effects found in male enhancement drugs.
I haven't really done too many watermelon recipes besides a potent greentini made with watermelon puree and Purus organic vodka but recently I was at a restaurant called Muse in Charleston where I had a super simple and delicious grilled watermelon salad.
Grilled Sesame Seed Encrusted Watermelon
1 cup watermelon, cut in square logs about 6 inches in length
1/4 cup sesame seeds
1 cup micro greens
1/4 cup scallions, chopped very thin, only the green part
1 tbsp organic sesame oil
1 tbsp soy sauce
Method
- Coat the watermelon in the sesame seeds and grill on each side for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.
- Plate up the dish by topping with micro greens, grilled watermelon, and scallions.
- Top with sesame oil and soy sauce and serve.
