How to Eat a Waste-Free Lunch

Somebody once said that there is no such thing as a free lunch. That guy obviously didn't have many friends. That's probably why he was so bitter and cynical about lunch-freeness. Lunches whether they are paid for or not should at least be waste-free.

There are a lot of products on the market that seem to want to promote waste. Hams and little cheese are squeezed into a plastic package with a packaged juice bottle squished between a chocolate morsel in a wrapper and a plastic straw housed in its own protective plastic wrapping.

With a meal like that you have to ask yourself, "How much food am I paying for and how much trash am I purchasing?" All those wrappers, pouches and plastic isn't free. It is also bad for every person, animal and plant on earth.

Tips for a waste-free lunch:

  1. Don't brown bag it. Use a reusable lunchbox and thermos.

  2. Buy your meats, breads and vegetables from a farmers' market. Bring a Tupperware container to carry home your meat purchases.

  3. Bring your own silverware and wash it. Bring your own cup, too.

  4. Instead of a candy bar for dessert, bake cookies. Buy all-natural ingredients in reusable tins or sacks.

  5. Eat fruit. It comes naturally wrapped by nature. The core or peel can be mulched or fed to pigs. (where applicable.)

Remember to eat right and by that, I mean, eat green!
