Somebody once said that there is no such thing as a free lunch. That guy obviously didn't have many friends. That's probably why he was so bitter and cynical about lunch-freeness. Lunches whether they are paid for or not should at least be waste-free.
There are a lot of products on the market that seem to want to promote waste. Hams and little cheese are squeezed into a plastic package with a packaged juice bottle squished between a chocolate morsel in a wrapper and a plastic straw housed in its own protective plastic wrapping.
With a meal like that you have to ask yourself, "How much food am I paying for and how much trash am I purchasing?" All those wrappers, pouches and plastic isn't free. It is also bad for every person, animal and plant on earth.
Tips for a waste-free lunch:
- Don't brown bag it. Use a reusable lunchbox and thermos.
- Buy your meats, breads and vegetables from a farmers' market. Bring a Tupperware container to carry home your meat purchases.
- Bring your own silverware and wash it. Bring your own cup, too.
- Instead of a candy bar for dessert, bake cookies. Buy all-natural ingredients in reusable tins or sacks.
- Eat fruit. It comes naturally wrapped by nature. The core or peel can be mulched or fed to pigs. (where applicable.)
Remember to eat right and by that, I mean, eat green!
