St. Patrick's Day is less than a week away and soon pseudo Irish pubs will be serving green beer and McDonald's will be serving green milkshakes. A little bit of harmless fun-or is it? According to GreenLiving Online, we should pay more attention to the artificial colours that are added to our food and drink.
Some of these chemicals used in food colouring are believed to be linked to anxiety, migraine headaches, childhood hyperactivity and tumours. If you consume a lot of processed foods you are at greater risk from the cumulative effect.
Journalist Meredith Dault writes:
Nature supplies us with all sorts of beautiful hues-from the rich red of beet juice, to ochre coloured turmeric, golden saffron and warm, brown caramelized sugar. Remember: eating a brightly coloured diet is the key to good health-just make sure you know where your colours are coming from!
I can't agree more. I'm going to politely decline the green beer and drink to St. Patrick's Day with a dark Guinness.
