As Sami recently pointed out on TreeHugger, Meat-Free Mondays are still on a roll. Championed by Paul McCartney, the campaign hopes to get folks collectively cutting their carbon footprint by eliminating meat in their weekly Monday diet—a small but substantial step considering that livestock production is responsible for 18 percent of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions.
The Beatles rocker’s sustainably stylish designer daughter, Stella McCartney, is also on board and was recently quoted in the UK Telegraph saying,
| It’s ok to just give up meat for one day, it doesn’t make you a vegetarian if you hate vegetarians, it doesn’t make you a cranky, hemp wearing pot smoker. It’s alright, it’s allowed - it doesn’t make you a kind of the person you don’t want to be. It just means you are doing something positive. If everyone gave it up on a Monday it would be more effective than everyone stopping driving their car on a Monday |
Though I love how Stella is making meatless eating more appealing and inclusive for those who might find a completely vegetarian diet daunting, I do have to remind you, dear readers, that a 100 percent meat-free diet is possible and the most effective in reducing your contribution to climate change. Take it from Matt.
And if you do wish to eliminate meat entirely you should do so without the fear that you’ll get lumped in with “hemp wearing pot smokers.” Not all vegetarians lack modern style and world view. Hemp doesn’t always have to be un-hip. I happen to have very cute and stylish hemp shoes! And as for pot smoking…well let’s just say, I know plenty of suit and tie-wearing, Wall Street types who enjoy it every now and again.
Stereotypes should certainly get squashed when it comes to saving the world.
