Super Bowl Sunday is also the Super Bowl of snacking, according to research by the Calorie Control Council and the Snack Food Association. On the big game day, Americans will nosh on 11.2 million pounds of potato chips, 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips, 4.3 million pounds of pretzels, 3.8 million pounds of popcorn, and 2.5 million pounds of nuts-that's 30 million pounds of snacks in total, sports fans.
Potato chips, the championship favorite of snacks, will account for 27 billion calories and 4 million pounds of fat nationwide, says the Council, or the equivalent of 13,000 National Football League offensive linemen at 300 pounds each. You don't have to ruin your New Year's resolution to lose weight, however-after all, the best offense is a good defense. Here are some of the Council's tips to help you keep your eyes on the ball:
1. Reach for fat-free potato chips: This could save up to 300 calories per person, the Council says. Nationwide, fat-free potato chips could cut 14 billion calories and 4 million pounds of fat from our snack attacks.2. Include no-fat and low-fat dip: It's possible to cut the fat, without cutting the flavor, the Council says. Try salsa, which is fat-free, or substitute your regular dips with reduced-fat sour cream and non-fat yogurt. Fresh herbs and spices, including cilantro, parsley, and hot peppers will give them an added zing.
3. Add fresh vegetables: Coupled with low-fat dip, fresh vegetables such as carrot sticks, broccoli, and celery, are a healthy appetizer that will take practically no time to put together.
4. Plan a pre-Super Bowl workout: To burn off those 1,200 calories from snacking during the Super Bowl, says Beth Hubrich, a dietitian with the council, you'd have to walk around a football field for 3 hours-or 1 hour and 45 minutes if you run. Alternatively, get into the game spirit by playing two hours of touch football to shed those calories, she recommends. "You certainly don't want to have a dietitian at your Super Bowl party calling -interference' when you and your friends start overindulging. But by doing a little game planning in advance, you can avoid becoming one of the millions of fans who eat 50 grams of fat in a very short period of time," Hubrich advises.
