Sometimes we're happy, sometimes we're sad and for some of us exerting control over this would be fabulous. Over the past two years, through tons of yoga and meditation, I've learned what makes me happy and helps me to get rid of that nasty low feeling that can sometimes really hurt. If you've got the blues here are some of my favorite remedies for getting back into a happy balance.
Say no to too many cups of Joe; say yes to yerba maté
Coffee can bring immediate gratification. That's why Americans collectively drink more than 400 million cups of coffee each day. Fifty percent of the population drinks at least two cups a day and twenty-five percent of coffee drinkers consume about five cups daily. But coffee also promotes anxiety. It makes you constantly think about the next thing on your to do list and never allows you to live in the now. It makes you jittery and then when you crash you feel awful. Instead, I love yerba maté. I buy the organic variety. I also make sure the company is free trade like Guayaki, and works to have as little impact as possible on the environment. Yerba maté is a tea that promotes a non-jittery heightened sense of awareness that quickly makes you feel great.
Cut back on the liquor
Stick to wine and beer if you want a drink and have a controlled amount of a high quality organic variety. If you control your consumption of liquor you won't ever wake up with that awful anxious feeling of having overdone it the night before.
Meditate
Sit with your feelings for a bit at least 15 to 20 minutes a day and eventually you will see a huge improvement. Meditation helps you remember that it's really just your monkey mind taking over and keeping you from living your life to the fullest.
Do yoga often
Yoga helps you to unblock your body and frees you from your worries and endless to do list. When you start doing yoga, remind yourself that for the next half hour or hour, you must let yourself have this time to think about nothing else but just being.
