Gadding about town on a bicycle is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. People who commute by bike tend to be healthier. For men, however, bicycles do have a slight health risk. Researchers have found that men who are avid mountain bikers run the risk of scrotal damage.
This scrotal damage manifests itself as benign tumors, sperm-containing cysts, calcium deposition in the sperm tube that can lead to infection, fluid cysts and twisted veins. Horrible, horrible stuff. Most people who commute by bicycle don’t have to worry about this. It is the constant bouncing and flouncing on the bike seat that leads to these health problems. If your commute to work is bumpy, you may want to think about taking precautions. You may want to think about taking precautions anyway.
There are simple things that can be done to prevent scrotal damage:
- Wear padded bike shorts.
- More padding on the seat.
- Make sure your seat fits you properly.
- Maintain good suspension.
- Get better shock absorbers.
Don’t be Afraid to Ride a Bike
These health problems manifest most often in avid mountain bikers. The average bicycle commuter runs very little risk of scrotal damage. That said, if you commute by bike over a mountain or live in a bumpy part of town, a little prevention can put the mind and other parts at ease.
