Make Your Party Bloom with Eco-Friendly Centerpieces

If you're hosting an all green dinner party like the ones on Supper Club, you likely put quite a bit of thought into the eco-friendly menu, but a toxin loaded centerpiece can throw your harmonious green balance out of whack.

The floral foam used to hold flowers in place, is a petroleum bi-product that off gasses formaldehyde when soaked in water. This foam is not biodegradable and has been linked to lung cancer in rare cases of extended exposure. Leaf shine, commonly used to shine greenery and plants, is an aerosol product that is also bad for the lungs. Not to mention the chemical pesticides used to keep non-organic flowers looking lively.

Use living centerpieces like fragrant hydrangeas or orchid plants or fill your favorite bowl with organic lemons or limes. You can also make your own flower arrangements with fresh flowers from your local farmers' market or order your flowers from an organic florist to ensure that the only thing you'll be taking in is the enticing scent of your farm fresh peonies.

Eco Business Links has a listing of organic flower providers in your area. It's best to get your flowers from a florist close to home so your beautiful blooms don't have to be hauled across the country before they reach you. The closer the florist, the fresher the flowers and the less energy consumed to get them to their destination.
