I cry at movies. A lot. I cry at happy endings, I cry at sad endings, I tear up in the middle. In fact, I cry at dog food commercials. There are some movies that I should only watch at home, knowing that otherwise, I will risk embarrassing myself or my family in public. I saw Kate Winslett in Finding Neverland in the theatre and I ran through so many tissues that my daughter had to give me all of the napkins she got with her popcorn.
So I went to see Kate Winslett in The Reader with a certain amount of trepidation. Imagine my surprise when the only dry eye in the house was mine. As fine a performance as Miss Winslett gave, I'm afraid I was unmoved by her character's plight, but I can't tell you why or it would ruin the film for you if you haven't seen it yet. Clearly the audience members around me who were audibly sobbing didn't share my views.
One of the things that interested me about the film was the teenaged lover's family. The only time we ever see his family is around the dinner table where you can see the their dynamic unfolding. I noticed that they always seemed to be eating some kind of soup, usually something that had potatoes in it. I came up with this traditional German soup, which is really heavy on the garlic. If you like, you can add some boiled potatoes to the recipe.
