It's that time of the year again. The Academy Awards are less than a week away and we are doing our Oscar party potluck dinner contributions based on nominated films. Now that the Academy has opened up the Best Picture category to 10 nominees rather than 5, we won't get to all of the films, but we'll still have some fun. We are starting the series this week with An Education, which includes nominations for Best Picture and Best Actress for Cary Mulligan.
Mulligan plays a 16 francophile school girl who is seduced by a much older man. No doubt, part of his charm is his seeming worldliness and his offer of a trip to Paris seals the deal for her. Anyone who has been to Paris knows that there are bistros on just about every street corner, and of course the thing to eat is the traditional bistro fare, steak and frites.
If you are a weekday vegetarian, the awards are luckily held on Sunday, so you can go ahead and indulge in a bit of meat for dinner. To make the frites a bit healthier I used sweet potatoes rather than white potatoes. Add a little green salad and you have a perfect Parisian dinner.
If you barbeque in the winter, go ahead and use that, but I broiled this in my gas oven for about 10 minutes.
Grilled Flank Steak
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 garlic clove, minced
2 teaspoons sugar
1 pound flank steak (3/4 inch thick)
1. Whisk together Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, oil, garlic, and sugar in a shallow dish. Add steak, turning to coat, and marinate at room temperature 15 minutes, or longer in the refrigerator.
2. Prepare a gas grill for direct-heat cooking over medium-high heat. Pat steak dry and season with 1/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Oil grill rack. Grill steak, covered, turning once, 8 to 10 minutes total for medium-rare.Transfer steak to a cutting board and let rest, uncovered, 5 minutes.
Sweet Potato Frites
1 sweet potato, peeled and cut into fries
vegetable oil for frying
salt
1. In a large skillet heat oil until it shimmers. Drop on piece of potato into the oil and if it starts to sizzle add the rest of the potato, without crowding. You may have to do this in batches. Once the fries are cooked remove them from the pan with a slotted spoon and drain them. Allow them to cool and then repeat the process, cooking them until they are crispy. Drain once again, then sprinkle with salt.
