There's nothing wrong with needing a little liquid refreshment after a day filled with any combination of diapers, tantrums, playdates, school pick up and drop off, PTA meetings, laundry, food fights, and more. I really did lay off the sauce for the entire (long) period of time I breastfed my daughter so my first few cocktails back were quite an experience. I'm more of a wine girl, even half a glass at about 5:59 p.m. can really make or break the dinner to bath to bed transition. But come summer, hand me a dark and stormy, a gin and tonic, or a margarita with actual lime juice and I'll be your best friend forever.

That said, what's in my glass needs to be as pure as what's on my plate—organic, and preferably local. Thankfully there are all sorts of organic rums, gins, and tequilas, not to mention vodkas, on the market. Local is a little harder to find in my neck of the woods. The problem is knowing what's good and what's not. And tasting through hard liquor isn't as quick of an experience as all of the wines made with organically grown grapes at your local store.
Enter the new eco-drinks bible, Organic Shaken And Stirred: Hip Highballs, Modern Martinis, And Other Totally Green Cocktails by Paul Abercrombie. It goes through brands, defines "organic" honey (psst: there's no such thing, bees, like un-farmed seafood are wild and therefore can't be certified), and goes over various certifications you might want to consider for the eggs you use in your cocktails. He addresses tools, glassware, and then delves into 101 cocktail recipes, divided by theme (Fresh and Zesty, Lush and Fruity, Clean and Classic, From The Garden, and Punch and Pitcher).
Who wants to meet me for a Jalisco Flower (organic grapefruit juice, elderflower liqueur, organic tequila, organic champagne? I promise I'll return the favor, by mixing up a shaker of Cherry Snaps (bourbon, organic cherries, ginger-infused organic simple syrup). I'm also desperate to try a Purple Basil Gimlet next summer when my CSA share includes those deep aubergine leaves, a Lavender Lemon Drop, a Grilled Persimmon Old Fashioned, and an Earl Grey Boxcar.
Cheers.
