I grew up about one mile away from the Foxfield Races in Charlottesville, Va. And though it wasn't exactly the Kentucky Derby, I've been to my share of horse races. Unfortunately, at the time my slight immaturity meant that the horse races were little more than a reason to overindulge (if you know what I mean) while avoiding the watchful eye of my parents. Today my favorite part of the horse races (though now largely enjoyed via television) is still the tailgating but I have to admit that I have brought it to the next level. There is nothing better than having friends over, setting up a few appetizers, and making mint juleps to welcome in the season. We don't wear the big hats or the Lilly Pulitzer dresses but if you came in such attire we wouldn't kick you out.
Mint Juleps
2 cups organic sugar
2 cups water
Sprigs of local mint
Crushed ice
Kentucky Whisky (2 ounces per drink)
Method
- Make a simple syrup by combining the sugar and water over medium heat. Stir constantly until the sugar completely dissolves, about 30 minutes.
- Cool and place in a covered container with about nine sprigs of fresh mint and refrigerate overnight.
- The next day make the mint juleps by filling a tall glass with crushed ice. Combine one tbsp of the mint simple syrup and two ounces of bourbon and ice in a drink shaker and shake vigorously. Pour over crushed ice. Garnish with mint sprigs.
