5 Ways Going Green Can Help You Lose Weight

Go green. Get fit.

It's been a couple months since the new year began. How are your resolutions holding up? Did you manage to lose that last ten pounds or decrease the size of your carbon footprint? Are you drinking less, saving money, finally asking that person out on a date? Even if you've fallen off the wagon, you may be able to combine a couple of your resolutions. You can lose weight by going green. Check out these 5 ways.

  1. Go Vegetarian/Vegan
Cutting meat out of your diet reduces your carbon footprint by over 5000 pounds annually. It can also reduce your weight in actual pounds annually. You don't see many hefty vegans and vegetarians out there. Studies have shown that vegetarians are thinner than meat-eaters.

  2. Bike/Walk to Work
Cut down on your commuter emissions by biking or walking to work. You'll save on gas and you’re likely to drop a couple of pant sizes.

  3. Pedal-Power Your TV
Don't be a couch potato. Be a couch Go-tato. Instead of sitting listlessly in front of the television, power it with your calories. The other benefit is that you're less likely to sit through a bad program.

  4. Use Old-School Implements
Ditch the snow blower, the leaf blower and the ride-on lawn mower and go back to the exercise-intensive shovel, rake and push mower.

  5. Gardening
Gardening is an excellent source of exercise. It's also a great source of local food. Gardening is often recommended for seniors who want to keep in shape. Tilling a garden is equal in effort to swimming or general aerobics. Remember to use those low-tech implements for a harder workout.

Bonus: Eating organic foods is usually better for you than eating processed foods. Organic foods often have less packaging waste as well.
