Man does not lose weight by exercise alone, according to scientists at the University of Missouri (MU). The problem, it seems, is that we're sitting too much, which causes critical fat-burning enzymes to shut down.
We spend a lot more time seated than our forebears did a century ago. Compound that with overeating, poor dietary habits, and precious little exercise, and you have a possible smoking gun for the dramatic uptick in obesity rates, says Marc Hamilton, associate professor of biomedical sciences at MU and leader of the research team.
The implication of the study is clear: If you need to shed some pounds, don't park your caboose all day-stand up. Or in Hamilton's words, "putter." ::ABC News
