More than a dash to spruce up a boring dish, all spices come with a list of health benefits (like bad breath-banishing, infection protection, and blood sugar-balancing) that are often totally missed when simply mixed into a crock pot. It's time to view your spice rack in a whole new purpose-driven way.
Can Lasagna Ward Off the Flu?
With cold weather (on flu/cold season) moving in, hot lasagna seems the thing to serve for dinner. The one pan, little-mess dish is perfect to make you feel good--both emotionally and apparently physically as well. Well, at least one particular ingredient: Oregano. Yes, the Italian spice packed with potent antibacterials- thymol and carvacrol, has been shown to derail impending infections, helping you to fight colds and flu this sick season.
Antioxidant-Packed Oregano
The underused "Italian spice" has 4-times the antioxidant power of blueberries and is a pro when it comes to protecting the intestinal tract from invading bad bacteria. Snip oregano from your garden to spruce up a dish and boost your health.
Here's how to harness your lasagna's potent potential:
Easy Lasagna Recipe
1 lb. ground beef (you can supplement turkey or tofu to make it lower in fat and carbon footprint)
1 tablespoon Oregano--chopped
1 teaspoon Onion flakes (you can also use ¼ of a fresh onion diced)
Salt and pepper
1 ½ cans Tomato Sauce
1 large container LF Cottage Cheese
10 thin slices organic cheddar cheese
--Cook the noodles until soft but not gooey.
--Brown the ground beef in a pan.
--Add oregano, onion flakes, salt and pepper. Stir to combine.
--Add tomato sauce.
--Cook until all liquid is out.
--Spread 1/2 cooked noodles evenly in bottom of 9 x 13 inch pan.
--Layer 1/2 of cottage over noodles, spread 1/2 of meat mixture, then 1/2 of American cheese slices, evenly.
--Repeat layers using remaining ingredients.
--Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes. Let set a few minutes before serving. Serves 6 to 8.
Serves 8
So... you're right, 1 tablespoon of oregano divvied up among 8 people isn't much and won't bolster your immune system dramatically. But here's the point: if you start to slip healing herbs here, there and everywhere, you will start to see a difference because, as I always say, the little things do add up.
