Recently I had purchased a Red Bull drink and noticed that even though there is a lot of Vitamin B, there is a lot of sugar (you can get sugar-free, but then you have that sugar replacement stuff instead).  While the health benefits of Vitamin B are huge, the health benefits of kombucha tea can be bigger and it is organic.  While the Red Bull can “give you wings,” this carbonated drinks packs a healthy punch. Then someone suggested Kombucha.  I thought they were saying something rude until they explained to me it was a drink with vitamins and more. Then I started tried Kombucha at the local health food store. I was sold.

Now I drink it over Red Bull anyday. Here is some more on this great carbonated drink!

History of Kombucha
Kombucha dates back to the Qin Dynasty in China (around 250 BC). The Chinese called it the 'Immortal Health Elixir,' because it was believed to aid in digestion because it balanced the Qi or the spleen and the stomach.  Also, a Korean physician named Kombu discovered the tea so to combination of the name Kombu and tea was like Kombu’s tea.  It is said to have originated in Japan around 415 AD.

Health Benefits of Kombucha
Kombucha is mixed cultures of several organic acids, active enzymes, amino acids, and polyphenols. The final kombucha product may contain acetic acid (which is said to provide anti-microbial activities), gluconic acid, glucuronic acid, other acids and some B-vitamins (like Red Bull).  Health claims for kombucha focus on a chemical called glucuronic acid.  That is a compound that is used by the liver for detoxification. Kombucha tea has been known to help with many health problems.

Some are:

  • Eczema
  • Other skin problems
  • Hair loss
  • Hypertension
  • Digestive and intestinal disorders
  • Arthritis
  • High cholesterol

The Glucaric Acid In Kombucha--Can It Help Fight Cancer?
The pubmed.gov website which is part of the National Institute of Health and the US Library of Medicine, they added that in some tests of people that which had glucaric acid would “have reduced risk of cancer development by ingesting food rich in D-glucaric acid”. Interestingly, glucaric acid is commonly found in fruits and vegetables.  Fruits and Vegetables have been independently talked about as cancer preventive agents. Also, in the American Association for Cancer Research, they discovered that the bacterial beta-glucuronidase enzyme can interfere with proper disposal of a chemotherapeutic agent, and that antibiotics against the gut microbiota can prevent toxicity of some chemotherapy drugs.
