In my family the holiday season means cookie season. While growing up my mom would bake all of her favorite cookie recipes to give away as gifts, and the leftovers fed us kids for days. My mother accumulated these amazing recipes over the years from old cookbooks and magazines, by asking her friends for their cookie recipes, and of course, from my grandmother. Another great way to open the doors to tons of fabulous baking ideas is through a cookie exchange party. And it's also a great reason to get together with friends, sample yummy cookies, and chat over a glass of wine.

Here are a few ideas for hosting your first green cookie exchange party:

  • Have everyone bring a sampling of their favorite cookie recipe and email the recipe to the group rather than print it.

  • Tell all invitees to green their recipe by using local ingredients where possible like eggs, cream, and produce; by using organic ingredients; and by bringing the cookies in a reusable container.

  • Serve high quality organic or biodynamic wine. Learn more about how to choose a green wine.

Need something to contribute? Why not try my greener oatmeal cookies? The dough can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until you're ready to make the cookies.

Greener Oatmeal Cookies

Yield: 2 Dozen Cookies

2 cups white sugar
2 cups organic brown sugar
3 cups sifted organic flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
2 tsp baking soda
2 cups local butter
6 cups organic rolled oats
1 tsp vanilla
1 local, organic egg
1/4 cup organic pecans
1/4 cup organic raisins

    Method:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. Combine all the ingredients and store in a cool place. Makes about 4 quarts.

  3. Once you're ready to make the cookies, combine 2 cups of the pre-made mixture along with the vanilla, egg, nuts, and raisins.

  4. Drop onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for about 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges are lightly brown.
