Over the holiday season keeping the pounds off can be the most difficult task at hand. Never are you more surrounded by temptation. For me it's all the baked goods that friends and family send my way. One bite becomes ten and five pounds later I'm planning next year's resolution. But over the years I've learned that with a little planning and some much needed will power, staving off those holiday pounds isn't quite as painful as I used to think it was. Stay fit this holiday season the green way with my easy maintenance tips:
- Make recipes without processed and fatty ingredients.
Choose recipes that make your farmers' market produce the center of attention and don't mask the flavor with tons of cream, sodium-laden "cream of" canned soups, or too much cheese. If you buy high quality ingredients like sweet potatoes, potatoes, green beans, and lettuces from the farmers' market you don’t need to add tons of fat to make the food delicious. - Stay active over the holidays.
Find green ways to workout. Use TreeHugger's guide to green workouts and stay active throughout the holiday season. Don't end up on the couch feeling sorry for yourself, put the fork down and get moving! - Have a snack before holiday parties.
Choose a healthy, green snack with tons of protein before you head to a holiday party. Check out this guide to the greenest proteins. Protein staves off hunger for a long period of time. If you head to a party famished, after a glass of wine you'll be head deep in the baked brie. - Lay off the booze.
The holidays can involve a lot of drinking if you let them. All those parties, along with that sometimes trying time with the family can add up to over indulgence. But don't let the Yuletide Spirit be an excuse to get drunk. Drinking too much makes you lose your inhibitions so you end up eating everything in sight if you're not careful. In addition, cocktails have a bunch of calories. Stay away from highly caloric cocktails like eggnog and instead, have glass or two of green wine.
